The Urge to Merge
Ajahn Karuṇadhammo
April 5, 2014

Having recently returned from two and a half months of travel and practice in Sri Lanka with Ajahn Yatiko, Ajahn Karuṇadhammo relates an experience of becoming entangled with unskillful mind states during a period when he and Ajahn Yatiko were separated for an unexpected length of time. Later, in practicing to work on this mental obstruction of anxiety, he encountered a teaching of Ajahn Chah’s, an instruction to practice walking meditation “until the mind separates from the thoughts.” From this place, Ajahn Karuṇadhammo realized, one can break the “urge to merge” with habitual kammic patterns of mind, and work instead to mingle this tranquil state with skillful thoughts and practices, of he which enumerates several. This talk was offered on April 5, 2014 at Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery.
