The Relish of Becoming
June 19, 2010: Investigating Bhavatanha
Ajahn Amaro
June 27, 2010
Ajahn Amaro describes bhavatanha as “the relish of becoming,” the pleasure that results from ascribing reality to our thoughts about a future self or world. He relates bhavatanha to self-identity view and clinging to conventions (two of the first three fetters that bind us to samsara) and contrasts it with the four aspects of right effort. Ajahn Amaro concludes by quoting three aphorisms from the late Barry Kapke that illustrate the nature of selfless effort. Given on June 19, 2010.
