Directions to the Monastery
Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery
16201 Tomki Road
Redwood Valley, CA 95470
Directions to Abhayagiri
1. Take the WEST ROAD exit* from HWY 101 north of Ukiah (about halfway between Ukiah and Willits).
2. Go straight over NORTH STATE STREET and then SCHOOL WAY.
3. Follow WEST ROAD until it reaches a T-junction ( 3 miles from the exit).
4. Turn left at the "T" onto TOMKI ROAD. Continue for four miles.
5. Look for a big turnout with 20 mailboxes on your right. The entrance to the monastery is right there.
*PLEASE NOTE: Some GPS devices and Internet websites incorrectly misdirect people who wish to visit Abhayagiri, whether coming from the south the west or the north. The most common misdirection is from the south, leading people off East Road and onto Road J, then onto a dirt road, driving 1/4 mile, and then to the gateway of "JK Ranch and Vineyard" - this is clearly marked with an overhead sign. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THIS PROPERTY! THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO THE MONASTERY!!! The road into this property goes through the owners' vineyard to a CLOSED gate, marked "no trespassing," and then proceeds on to 400 acres of mountain roads which are NOT made for traffic, and can be VERY dangerous. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO GO!
The owners of this vineyard have been very patient with the dozens of people who have come onto their property looking for Abhayagiri over the last couple of years, taking the trouble to follow after them and redirect them, however, we would dearly like to save them this bother and the burden on their time and goodwill.
Google has been contacted twice so far to see if this problem can be resolved, to no avail, so we ask you kindly to CONSULT A REAL MAP, USE THE DIRECTIONS LISTED HERE, AND DO NOT USE YOUR GPS in order to reach Abhayagiri.
Please also note: Sometimes GPS readings indicate that Tomki Road can be accessed from Wilitts to the north. In reality, the extreme northern stretch of Tomki Road is a very rough undeveloped road with several creek crossings, often impassable.
We wish you a safe and easeful journey.
