This is a brief announcement to let people know that a community of nuns in the United States is hoped for in the near future. For many years there has been a great deal of interest for something like this to take place, and many people have been gathering together to help support and establish a nuns' sangha here in California.

With the conclusion of the Abhayagiri monastics’ three-month winter retreat on March 31, the April 1 edition of the Sanghapala First Tuesday Gathering in Berkeley welcomed the return of Ajahn Amaro, accompanied by Anagarika Michael, for tea, chanting, meditation, taking the refuges and precepts, and a Dhamma talk. For the occasion, Ajahn focused on Nibbana, the subject of a forthcoming book (The Island) on which he and Ajahn Pasanno have been collaborating for about a decade.

First Tuesday in Berkeley: March 2008

The monthly First Tuesday Sanghapala gathering in Berkeley was once again fortunate to be able to host Ajahn Ānandabodhi from Amaravati Monastery in England. Following up on her February visit to Berkeley with Ajahn Santacitta (who was ill and not able to attend this month), Ajahn summarized what the two had experienced during their visits in January, February, and March to the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the Pacific Northwest, and Oklahoma for the purpose of exploring opportunities for establishing a community of nuns (Sīladhāras) in the United States. The Ajahns have now returned to England, but in April and May, a second group comprising Ajahns Upekkhā and Thānasanti will be visiting Colorado and the Pacific Northwest. In June, Ajahns Candasiri and Ānandabodhi will again be in the Bay Area.

An Offering of Gratitude

I was last here almost ten years ago, and it’s been very nice to look around and see the changes that have happened. From England we hear about the hard work at Abhayagiri so it’s nice to see the fruits of that hard work. Ajahn Santacitta was here just the year before me so this is our second visit after a very long gap. It’s quite heartening to see what the community has done with the place and the property. Many people who have come through here and people connected to Abhayagiri have benefited from it. When we were coming today, we felt it was auspicious that it was both the late-night sit (the lunar observance day), and Ajahn Chah’s memorial day.

Journey to the Source

As you walk into Jeta’s Grove, you can see the Ānanda Bodhi tree on your right. The tree is so old that there are now a few metal props to support its branches. There were monks from other traditions chanting and meditating under the tree. We too chanted and meditated under the tree for a while before going to the Buddha’s kuti. Jeta’s Grove is not a crowded place, so we had some quality time to meditate and listen to the Sutta (read by Ajahn Cattāmalo) in the Buddha’s kuti. We also took a few pictures at the Mangala Sutta spot—where a deva came down to ask the Buddha about the greatest blessings.
